Apple Music to Musixmatch

Notice: Future of Apple Music to Musixmatch

Written at: 21rd July, 2025
Last updated at: 5th August, 2025

Hi everyone. If we haven’t met — I'm Minsu Kim, the developer behind AM to MxM.

When I first created AM to MxM, it wasn’t meant to be a “product.” It wasn’t monetised. It was simply something I wanted to build — a small tool to bridge Apple Music with Musixmatch, so contributors could more easily subtitle lyrics, sync metadata, and improve accessibility across platforms.

Over time, the tool found its audience. A few dozen, then hundreds. People who genuinely cared about music, lyrics, translation, and open contribution. That meant the world to me.

Unfortunately, today I have to share that AM to MxM will be shutting down on 25th August, 2025.

Why?

Musixmatch recently announced that they are ending their free API plan. After that date, all access will require a paid subscription — $59/month.

I fully understand and respect their decision. It’s their platform, and they’re choosing to focus on premium services.

But for this project — a free, non-commercial tool that only accessed track metadata (not full lyrics) — I simply can't justify or sustain that cost on my own.

⏲️ What now?

  • The service will stay online until 25th August, 2025.

  • After that date, the tool will go offline, and access via the app or am-to-mxm.lunaiz.com will stop working.

  • If Musixmatch ever revises its pricing policy, or if a sponsor steps in, I’d love to bring it back.

🙇‍♂️ Want to help?

Some of you have asked if there’s a way to keep AM to MxM alive. Here's the reality:

  • Musixmatch API: $59/month ($708/year) in Basic (500 queries) plan

  • Apple Developer Programme: $99/year

  • Total: $807/year

If you'd be willing to help cover these costs — whether as a one-time donation or recurring support — please DM me on the Musixmatch Community Slack, or email us at srv.am2mxm@lunaiz.com.

I’m open to ideas, and I’d be deeply grateful for any support.

🙋 FAQ

Q. What exactly does AM to MxM do?
A. It lets you quickly search and link Apple Music tracks to Musixmatch’s lyrics catalogue. It was built to help translators and syncers improve accuracy and speed during contribution.

Q. How much is Musixmatch requiring you to pay?
A. If we use Basic plan (500 queries), it will be $59/month ($708/year).
If we use Scale plan (2000 queries), it will be $239/month ($2,868/year).

Q. Why can’t you just keep using the metadata part of the API?
A. Unfortunately, even access to basic metadata (like track info) is included in the new paid plan. Musixmatch no longer offers any free tier after 25th August, 2025.

Q. How was the Apple Developer Programme fee covered before?
A. Originally, I planned to cover the $99/year fee out of pocket — I had several iOS app projects in the works that I hoped to release. Unfortunately, those plans didn’t materialise.

Thanks to the generosity of a few early supporters, I was able to pay for a year (through November 2025) via community donations. However, funding the next renewal (from November 2025 onward) will likely be just as difficult without additional support.

Q. How about Spotify to MxM?
A. I've asked Adel, the developer of Spotify to MxM, and he said "Sadly, I believe this is the end of my project."

Q. Can you open source the project?
A. I’m considering it! If there’s interest, I can clean it up and publish the codebase once the service goes offline. In the mean time, you can see the repository of Spotify to MxM for your reference.

Q. Can we help in other ways (besides money)?
A. Absolutely. Suggestions, bug reports, dev help, or even spreading the word all help. Just reach out!

Q. My question isn't here!
A. My bad. If more questions pop up, I'll add them back here, or you can just ask us directly through Slack or email and I'll try to answer.

Q. I'm really mad at you!
A. Sorry. I apologise to everyone who loved this project.
